The York Chocolate occurred naturally as a working cat. The first kitten, "Brownie" was born in 1983 in Grafton, New York and all bonafide cats are descended from her. The first "lavender" appeared around 1990. Mature male may weight 10-16 pounds.

The fur is silky soft and requires little or no grooming. Shedding is minimal. This breed is bright and intelligent. They are energetic and playful with an easy going personality.
